Get a smaller fan for background noise, dummy

Isn’t it funny how a habit can outweigh our highly logical brains? I run into this all the time in my own life, as well as other people’s. Sometimes, other folks don’t want to hear about the obvious mistakes that they’re making, though. Recently, I accidentally upset my friend and potentially ruined our entire relationship by suggesting that she invest in a smaller standing fan for her room. I thought that this was a pretty inert recommendation, but a lot of people want to complain more than they want to make changes. The conversation all started because my friend was complaining about trying to work from home during this quarantine. Apparently, her neighborhood and her household are both very loud and distracting. She has trouble working unless she has a lot of background noise to drown out the unfortunate sounds, and her favorite white noise machine was her HVAC system. She really loved the sound of the air conditioner running outside of her room because the cooling device was so loud. Every day, she set her indoor air temperature super low so the AC system was running all morning and afternoon. She admitted that she opened the windows sometimes to allow hot air into the house, just to keep the thermostat convinced that more cooling power was necessary. This way, her AC hardly ever turned off, and she could concentrate for hours on end. When I asked her about her energy bill, she said it was massive but necessary. She would just need to cancel our trip next year for the sake of the energy bill. That’s when I carefully asked if she would consider giving that cooling system a break and using a small table fan for background noise instead. Considering she hung up on me, I guess she’s not interested.
